Join the Mission to Preserve the 9/11 Memorial Plaza!
In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedies, and to ensure the long-term viability of the 9/11 Memorial Plaza, the California State Fair Foundation is launching a giving campaign. As we prepare for the 25th anniversary remembrance event this year, we need your help to fund the work necessary to restore the exhibits that honor the nearly 3,000 victims, first responders, and military personnel who served and sacrificed on 9/11 and in its aftermath.
Your donations will go directly to the following efforts required to meet this goal:
- Restoration of the granite sphere fountain, engraved with the names of those who lost their lives.
- Maintenance of the carillon bells and tower they are housed in.
- Revitalization of the pentagon and twin towers replicas.
- Installation of permanent photo displays to replace the temporary framed photos
- Construction of a permanent shade structure for visitors and community presentations.
- Development of educational materials to ensure future generations never forget.
Through your gifts, we can continue the mission of the California State Fair Foundation to honor those who have served and to remind us of all so many gave to ensure our continued freedom today.

9/11 Memorial Plaza
In observance of the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, the 9/11 Memorial Plaza pays tribute to the victims, honors the survivors and educates the public about the 2,977 people killed in the terror attacks at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon and to observe the 9/11 rescue and recovery efforts. The 9/11 Memorial Plaza is located at the Cal Expo grounds outside of the Expo Center Building 2 and open to the public year-round. Each year on 9/11, law enforcement, firefighters, veterans, survivors, families and California’s communities come together at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza to honor those who have lost their lives and to recognizes the courage, selflessness, and perseverance of the men and women of the rescue and recovery effort.

Memorial for the Pentagon attack
The Largest 9/11 Memorial in the West Coast
Construction of the Cal Expo memorial began a year after the attack, when Cal Expo board member Larry Davis personally acquired and donated 125,000 pounds of wreckage from the World Trade Center.
Central to the exhibit is a beautiful fountain including a granite sphere inscribed with all of the names of the September 11 victims, as well as a carillon bell tower, reflections of the World Trade Center, and individual memorials to American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93, aborted in a field in Pennsylvania.
